Celebrex, a pharmaceutical arthritis drug, has been prescribed for a growing number of patients who are not responding well to older-established therapies. For those in the clinical trials, it appears to be the best option for those who are in severe pain and have not received effective treatment. These patients may be at a greater risk for severe side effects, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and they may be particularly vulnerable to the drug’s interaction with other drugs that might interact with Celebrex, the new study authors said.
Although the study was not designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Celebrex in people, the study authors said they hoped it would help to make the decision to prescribe Celebrex more widely and quickly the drugs in question were less expensive and more easily accessible to patients, said Dr. Michael Beecham, a clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center.
“The benefits of Celebrex over other drugs cannot be overstated to patients,” he said, adding that some patients may be less willing to take the drug if they do not have a prescription, or if they have other medical conditions that could lead to the drug being prescribed, Beecham said.
In one of the two new trials, Beecham and other researchers at Georgetown University and colleagues were able to show that people who take Celebrex in combination with other drugs that are similar to celecoxib, called celecoxib, had significantly greater improvement in pain when they took Celebrex and in terms of joint pain as compared to people who took a placebo. This is because both drugs are known to affect osteoarthritis, the inflammation in the joint that causes pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. In addition to the drugs, Celebrex was also shown to be more effective than the other drugs in preventing the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.
“There is no doubt that the combination of Celebrex with other drugs known to reduce the progression of osteoarthritis in rheumatoid arthritis patients is a highly effective treatment for these patients,” Beecham said in a statement.
